Uber has quickly become one of the most popular and convenient methods of transportation around the world.
But can you actually save money using Uber?
The short answer: yes.
Since I began travelling full-time in 2014, I have used a fair share of transportation methods. But not all of them have turned out great…
A little backstory: When I was in Gdansk, Poland, I had really bad luck with a taxi driver at the train station.
I had just come off an 8-hour bus ride from Krakow, with a rolling suitcase and backpack in tow. It was late, I was tired and I didn’t feel like taking public transportation to my Airbnb. So I decided to take a taxi instead.
I approached a driver who had a clearly-marked vehicle in the taxi line. I made sure that the meter was turned on and I gave him my address. We drove 6km and I was charged over $30 for the trip!
To put things in perspective, this trip should of only cost me around $8.
was am still really frustrated by this because I consider myself a seasoned traveler and I thought I knew how to use taxis correctly.
After the problems I experienced using a taxi abroad, I decided to take my first Uber ride using a promo code (like the free Uber ride coupon I give you later in this post). In all honesty, I was a little nervous because I had never tried ride sharing before.
I’m happy to report that my first Uber trip (which was in Bucharest of all places) turned out amazing. My driver showed up in a cool and clean car, let me charge my phone in the backseat and even gave me some local tips on places to eat in my area.
Because of how well my first Uber ride turned out, I have taken over 50 rides since! It is my go-to method of transportation, whether I am at home or abroad.
I highly recommend using Uber when you need a ride somewhere, especially while travelling.
How You Can Save Money Using Uber
& How to Get Your First Uber Ride Free
Competitive and All-Inclusive Pricing
Uber pricing is fair and easy to understand. From my experience in Europe and North America, it’s almost always cheaper than taking a taxi. And best of all, the payment details are all-inclusive and already taken care of! You don’t have to worry about carrying the right amount of cash with you and there is no tip required. Say thanks to your driver and exit the vehicle. The ride is charged to your card on file and you will be emailed a receipt.
Credit Card Rewards and Cash Back
You can earn credit card rewards on your Uber rides. For example, with the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card, you can earn 3 points per dollar on all travel purchases, including Uber rides. And many American Express cards allow you to earn double points on Uber transactions. If you can earn cash back or bonuses from shopping at certain supermarkets and stores, you can even buy an Uber gift card for yourself.
Save Time and Get Fare Estimates
No need to find the number of a local cab company and rack up your roaming charges, wait in line at a taxi stand or hail down a cab from the curb – you can order your Uber ride on an app. A really good app. As a passenger, you can enter in your exact destination details (especially helpful if there is a language barrier between you and your driver), get a fare estimate up front and track your vehicle when it is in route to you. I have yet to come across a taxi app that can do all of that.
Great Support and Easy Refunds
The Uber support team is unlike any other. If something goes wrong during your Uber ride, submit a complaint through the app and the support team will resolve the issue. In my experience, they will usually provide you a complete refund for the trip.
Your First Uber Ride is Free
If you haven’t used Uber before, I have an Uber promo code that you can use to get $20 off your first ride through Uber. The Uber coupon code is “uberczechyourself“. Uber doesn’t offer discounts or coupons to regular users. But new riders can sign up for Uber using a promo code and get $20 off their first ride. If the ride is less than $20, the ride will be completely FREE!
