Blogging Tips

Why You Should Switch to Siteground

When I first started my blog, I went with Bluehost.

At first, everything was great. But once I started getting more traffic, my site became slower and started crashing all the time.

Until one day, I checked my Google Analytics and saw that my page loading speed was 38.5 seconds!! That’s just totally unacceptable.

So, I called up Bluehost and asked them what the heck was going on!

They told me that I was “using up too many resources” and they “couldn’t handle my traffic“.

Their solution?

Upgrade to VPS hosting for an additional $16 per month.

AND they flat-out said that if I didn’t upgrade my account, they would keep “deactivating” my site to ensure I didn’t continue to use all of their resources.

…that’s the precise moment when all my love for Bluehost dwindled away. So, I hit the world wide web in search of a solution. And I found one, in the form of Siteground.

As it turns out, Siteground has faster speeds, better security and top-notch customer support. So, once I found out how to get a refund from Bluehost, switching to Siteground was an easy decision!

I wrote this “Bluehost Vs. Siteground” post to show you the benefits of Siteground, how to switch from Bluehost to Siteground AND how to get your money back from Bluehost. Let’s get into it!

Bluehost Vs. Siteground

Need blog hosting? Wondering who is the best hosting provider? It all comes down to Bluehost vs. Siteground. And in this post, I talk about the benefits of Siteground, how to make the switch & how to get your money back from Bluehost! #wordpress #siteground #bloggingtips

Siteground Benefits

If you’re currently experiencing problems with Bluehost (or any other hosting provider) and want to know why so many bloggers are switching over to Siteground, here is a quick overview of the many benefits:

1. Siteground is Faster

Like, a lot faster.

Even though page loading speed might not seem that important – it’s a big deal for your visitors. People don’t want to wait around all day for your site to load! Slower speeds mean higher bounce rates and LESS people reading your stuff.

With Bluehost, my pages were taking up to 40 SECONDS to load.

So, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Siteground has some of the FASTEST loading times in the biz! The industry average loading time is 4.7 seconds and Siteground’s loading time is just 1.7 seconds. That’s a big difference!

Take a look at this screenshot to see how they compare:

2. Siteground is Safer

Siteground is one of the official hosting company recommendations from WordPress.

Due to their top security measures, Siteground is one of the official hosting company recommendations from WordPress itself.

Their security team are constantly monitoring accounts for any vulnerabilities. They update your account and plugins automatically and make daily backups of your hosting account!

3. Siteground has Better Support

Honestly, this should be reason enough to choose Siteground over any other hosting provider.

The Siteground customer support team is like a dream. They offer 24/7 support – including live chat – and they are known for having virtually non-existent wait times.

Like, when I called Bluehost to cancel my membership, I had to wait on hold for almost 20 minutes. And when I called Siteground right after to confirm the switch, they picked up instantly. It’s no wonder why Siteground consistently achieves nearly 100% customer satisfaction.

How to Switch from Bluehost to Siteground

If I’m being totally honest, I was really scared of switching over from Bluehost to Siteground. I didn’t want to mess anything up! But I’m happy to report that the entire process was extremely straightforward and simple.

So, I’m going to walk you through the whole thing step-by-step and show you how to get Siteground to TRANSFER your blog from Bluehost for FREE.

1. Choose a hosting plan from Siteground

Simply visit Siteground and choose one of their three plans. By using my affiliate link, you’ll be able to score a 60% discount – just like in the image shown below!

Choosing the right plan should be easy, because Siteground gives a great description of each one. If you’re just starting out, the “StartUp” plan is perfect for you! But, I personally went with the GrowBig plan to accommodate more traffic!

2. Enter your domain & review your details

After you select a hosting plan and click “Get Started“, you’ll reach Step 2 of the sign-up process: Choosing a Domain Name.

Enter in your domain name and check off the little box that says “Free Website Transfer” on the bottom. And if you don’t see a little “Website Transfer” box, don’t worry. It will be on the next and final page.

I can’t even begin to describe how THANKFUL I was that Siteground offers this service for free. With Bluehost for example, a site transfer costs $150!

Click “Proceed” and review your purchase details. Again, you should see a green check mark beside “Free Website Transfer” and “Free SSL Certificate” – it’s pretty awesome, I know.

3. Request your FREE site transfer

Open up your Siteground dashboard and click the “Support” tab in the top menu. Scroll down to “Request Assistance From Our Team” and click “Contact Us Here“.

A new “Request Assistance” tab will open up. Click on “Transfer Website“. From here, you can provide your Bluehost and WordPress log-in details and submit your support ticket.

Siteground will begin working on your website transfer and contact you once it’s complete. Keep in mind this process could take up to 24 hours – mine was done in under an hour!

You might also have to change your namesavers from Bluehost.

The process is very simple and Siteground will tell you exactly what to do. I basically had to log into my Bluehost dashboard, click on “Domains” then “Manage Domains” and then under “Nameservers” change to Siteground.

Easy peasy, right?

How to Cancel & Get a Refund from Bluehost

Once your blog is totally transferred over to Siteground, it’s time to cut ties with Bluehost. The good news is that you’ll also be able to get a refund for your unused months! Or, if you’ve been with Bluehost for less than 30 days, you can get an ENTIRE refund. Here’s how:

1. Contact Bluehost

In order to process a cancellation, you can contact Bluehost one of four different ways:

  • Online Chat
  • Submitting a Support Ticket
  • Requesting a Cancellation Form
  • By phone (1-888-401-4678 ext. 4)

2. Request the Cancellation

If you’ve been with Bluehost for less than 30 days:

  • You can take advantage of their money-back guarantee. Simply start a chat or call Bluehost and tell them you would like to cancel your hosting. Keep in mind that this refund is not applicable to any extra services, like domains.

If you’ve been with Bluehost for over 30 days:

  • You can receive a prorated refund, which means you will get your money back for any unused months. For example, if you purchased a 12-month plan and cancel 6 months in, you will receive a refund for the remaining 6 months. There are no penalties or hidden fees for an early cancellation.

3. Verify the Cancellation

Bluehost will send you a cancellation link which will take you to your Dashboard. From here, you’ll need to verify your personal information, confirm that you have all of your backups (Siteground did this for you) and accept the cancellation terms. You will also have to give a reason for cancellation.

Once everything is filled out, click “Submit” and rest-assured knowing that your Bluehost account is totally cancelled and a refund is on the way!

Are there any benefits to Bluehost?

Of course.

I am not saying that Bluehost is a terrible hosting company that should be avoided at all costs. I used their services for several months without experiencing any issues!

One of the benefits to using Bluehost is that their hosting plans are cheap.

So, if you are a brand new blogger who is on a tight budget and doesn’t have high traffic numbers Bluehost might be a good option for you!

At least you know that it will be possible to get a refund if you decide to cancel in the future.

Final Notes

Alright. So, now that you know the benefits of Siteground, the fact that you can transfer your site for free AND get a refund from Bluehost, I want to know who you’re going to choose.

Are you going to stay with Bluehost? If so, tell us why in the comments below!

Or are you going to switch over to Siteground?

I moved to my site to SiteGround from GoDaddy last year, using the free transfer. I have just renewed for another year. Their service is top class.
I am in an unusual position of managing my employer’s site on Bluehost, with my own site on Siteground. I had the opportunity to understand Bluehost’s performance before making the move. Bluehost works for a low traffic, small site, but it is not impressive. Siteground is impressive. Definitely a good choice.
